# Skills

> Reusable instruction files installed into agent sessions

## Overview

A skill is a Markdown instruction file in the [Agent Skills](https://agentskills.io) format. Environments list skills by name; each session gets them written to `.claude/skills/<name>/SKILL.md`, where Claude Code loads them on demand.

Skills are versioned. Adding a skill whose name already exists creates version `N+1`; environments pin the exact version they resolved at creation, so editing a skill never changes an existing environment version.

```bash theme={null}
veri skills add pdf-processing --file ./skills/pdf.md -d "Use when the task involves PDF files" --allowed-tool Read --allowed-tool Bash
veri skills list
veri skills get pdf-processing --version 1
veri skills delete pdf-processing
```

```python theme={null}
client.skills.add(
    "pdf-processing",
    open("skills/pdf.md").read(),
    description="Use when the task involves PDF files",
    allowed_tools=["Read", "Bash"],
)
```

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `name` | `[a-z0-9][a-z0-9_-]{0,63}`. Reusing a name adds a version. |
| `description` | One line the harness uses to decide when the skill applies. |
| `instructions` | The SKILL.md body. At most 256 KiB per skill, and 256 KiB total per environment. |
| `allowed_tools` | Advisory tool list written into the skill's frontmatter. |

Reference a skill from an environment as `"pdf-processing"` (latest at creation time) or `"pdf-processing@2"` (pinned).
